History and Its Significances

On 24 May 2017, the General Assembly made a resolution called "The Role of Language Professionals in Connecting Nations and Fostering Peace, Understanding and Development" and decided that 30 September would be International Translation Day.

Every year on September 30, people celebrate International Translation Day to thank the experts who help connect societies. The said date was picked out as it coincides with the feast day of St. Jerome, the Bible translator, who is also known as the patron saint of translators.

International Translation Day is imparted as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays a crucial role in bringing forward nations together, assisting dialogue, understanding and cooperation, imparting to development and strengthening world peace and safety. Most common explanations would agree that the intention of translation is to “communicate the original tone and intent of a message, taking into account cultural and regional differences between origin and target languages”

It is observed every year to spread awareness about the translation profession and to pay approval to the work of language professionals. It assists in boosting cultural heritage and mutual respect in our changing world. September 30 is celebrated globally as International Translation Day by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) in honor of translation professionals.

Though Federation of Translators (FIT), since its formation in 1953, has been observing this day, the first conventional celebrations of the world translation day took place only in 1991. Nevertheless, it was on May 24, 2017, when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), through resolution 71/288, formally acknowledged September 30 as the date to observe the International Translation Day. Total 11 countries were signatories to the draft resolution: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Paraguay, Qatar, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Vietnam.

United Nations describes International Translation Day as an “chance to pay tribute to the work of language professionals,” which, according to the global body, plays an crucial role in “bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, perceptive and cooperation, imparting to improvement and strengthening global peace and security.” Every year, since 2005, it invites all its employees, recognized permanent missions staff and students from partner universities to take part in the UN St. Jerome Translation contest.

The competition honors best translation works in languages such as Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and German. Multilingualism, the UN says, is one of its "core values." The organization employs hundreds of language staff at its offices across the globe.

Importance of International Translation day

Importance of International Translation day is that the translator and interpreter are two professions committed to one goal that is assisting communication between people. Both interpreters and translators are at the junction point that impacts the expansion of business, science, medicine, technology, international law, politics, and a host of other areas. This will furnish the ability for each of these in the world to acquire from each other to the benefit of society as a whole.

As it is crucial to preserve and protect the languages of millions of indigenous people around the world. Languages for indigenous people are an inherent part of their society. And it is said that when a community loses its language, it is on the way to lose its culture too.

International Translation day is a recent entry into the calendar of world events. It is founded by the International Federation of Translators (FIT). Celebrating this day every year is to pay tribute to the work of translators and the interpreters who break down the language obstructions to make the world a somewhat smaller place. This day is observed with a series of events, seminars, and symposiums across the world.
